The Ultimate Hospital Bag Checklist: What You Actually Need (2025 Edition)
You are hitting the 35-week mark. You are nesting. You are staring at an empty weekender bag and wondering, "Do I really need 5 different outfits? What if I forget something?"
Take a deep breath, Mama. We’ve been there.
The truth is, most hospital checklists are filled with things you won't use. You don't need your entire beauty routine, but you do need comfort. Hospital air is dry, the floors are cold, and those standard-issue hospital gowns? Let’s just say they aren't designed for modesty or softness.
Here is the Milk & Baby Approved Checklist of what you actually need to pack for labor, delivery, and those sweet first days.
1. For Mom: Comfort & Recovery
This is the most important part of the bag. You are doing the hard work, so you deserve the softest gear.
-
A 3-in-1 Labor Gown: Trust us, you do not want to labor in the stiff, scratchy hospital gown that ties in the back (and leaves your backside exposed!). Pack a Bamboo Labor Gown that has snaps for epidural access, opens in the front for immediate skin-to-skin, and feels like your favorite t-shirt.
-
A Robe for "Hallway Walks": You will be up and walking to help labor progress or just to grab ice chips. A Matching Robe keeps you covered when doctors and visitors pop in.
-
The "Going Home" Outfit: You will still look about 6 months pregnant when you leave the hospital (totally normal!). Pack a loose, high-waisted Lounge Set or a soft dress that doesn't put pressure on your midsection.
-
Nursing Bras: Your milk might not come in until you get home, but you need support now. Pack a soft, wire-free Sleep Bra for night feeds.
-
Postpartum Underwear: Skip the flimsy mesh panties. Pack a few pairs of High-Waisted Recovery Underwear that are designed to hold heavy pads and sit gently over a C-section incision.
-
Non-Slip Socks: Hospital floors are slippery and cold. Pack a cute pair of grippy socks (it’s a small luxury that makes a huge difference).
2. For Baby: The First Photo
You don't need diapers or wipes (the hospital provides those!). You just need warm, cozy layers for that first car ride.
-
The Announcement Outfit: This is the outfit your baby will wear for their "Hello World" photo. We love a Matching Mom & Baby Set for a cohesive look.
-
A Knotted Gown: Zippers and snaps are a nightmare in the dark. A CloudBlend™ Knotted Gown allows for silent, 30-second diaper changes.
-
Swaddle & Hat: Hospitals keep the rooms cool. Bring a Bamboo Swaddle to keep baby snug and camera-ready.
3. The Toiletries (The "Don't Forget" List)
-
Lip Balm: This is non-negotiable. Hospital air is incredibly dry.
-
Extra-Long Phone Charger: Outlets are never where you need them to be. Get a 10-foot cable so you can reach your phone from the hospital bed.
-
Nipple Balm: Start protecting your skin from the very first latch.
-
Toiletries: Travel-size shampoo, face wash, toothbrush, and a hairbrush. That first shower after delivery feels amazing—be ready for it.
4. For the Support Partner
-
Snacks: The hospital cafeteria closes eventually. Pack protein bars, jerky, or trail mix.
-
A Button-Down Shirt: If Dad or a partner wants to do skin-to-skin, a Skin-to-Skin Shirt or button-down makes it easy.
-
Pillow and Blanket: Hospital pull-out couches are notoriously uncomfortable. Bringing a pillow from home can help them get actual rest.
When should I pack?
We recommend having your bag packed and by the door by 36 or 37 weeks. Babies run on their own schedule!
